Automobile Accidents in Louisville

Lawyers at John H. Ruby & Associates can help you deal with a serious automobile accident in Louisville.  Even relatively minor injuries run up medical bills and take time away from work.

Most people experience an automobile accident at some point during their life—a Louisville automobile accident should not be taken lightly.  In 2005, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that motor vehicle accidents resulted in more U.S. deaths for people from age eight to 34 than any other cause.

Common types of automobile accident injury in Louisville

Many types of injuries are possible in an auto accident.  However, some of the most common auto accident injuries include:

  • Whiplash.  Rear end accidents in particular cause whiplash, making the head suddenly jerk forward and backward.  Whiplash can jar neck vertebra out of place and cause soft tissue damage.  Despite the fact that most people recover quickly from whiplash, neck muscles may seize up, causing pain and limiting movement.  In severe cases, whip lash chronically injures the vertebra.
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Sudden rapid movement (with no actual blow) may be sufficient to make the brain crush violently against the skull bone, bruising or even tearing brain tissue.  Whiplash can cause traumatic brain injury, but so can a head hitting the dashboard or some other solid surface.  Common in car accidents, TBI symptoms may include dizziness, unconsciousness, extreme headache, slurred speech, vomiting, and loss of equilibrium.  More severe neurological damage from traumatic brain injury may involve amnesia, coma, and even death.
  • Spinal cord injury.  Motor vehicle accidents are the largest cause of spinal cord injury in the United States.  When the spinal cord is seriously damaged, loss of feeling and muscle function occurs.  The cord does not have to be severed for extensive damage.  Because the spinal cord is made up of nerves, and nerves do not regenerate, damage is permanent.  Severe damage causes paralysis to the area of the body below the injured area of the spinal cord.
